George Harris,the protagonist portrayed in Uncle Tom’s Cabin,is Eliza’s husband.Unlike Eliza as a submissive wife,George knows to rebel against slavery and he would rather die if he is treated in an unequal way.Even in front of slavery,George has a healthy sense of his own worth that he demands centrality.
Firstly,George’s centrality can be embodied from his own idea that he is a better man than the one whose“property”he is.To put it more specifically,George has said to Eliza that“I know more about business than he does;I am a better manager than he is;I can read better than he can;I can write a better hand”,which can well show that he is with self-superiority and he can still see his advantages even if he is insulted and tormented by his master.
Moreover,George’s decision to escape from the life of being slaved can also account for his centrality to a certain degree.George would like not to do the dirtiest,hardest and meanest work any more and he deemed that the master assigned him to do the work that any horse could do so that he was not willing to continue doing that work.In the opposite,he held that he should be respected and he should have a position in the factory and the manager had no right to order him.Therefore he would rather die if he lost his freedom,which is right why he would choose to escape.
Last but not the least,George’s not trusting in God but in his own efforts can justify for his centrality all the same.The more detailed condition is that when Eliza told him that God is doing the best,George instead said that he was full of bitterness and one who had experienced the pains he had endured would not believe in God.But he believed that his own efforts could make some change even if he could not successfully get himself out of the terrible situation.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin is really an emotionally powerful book in that it is able to galvanize public opinion against slavery so that the readers can all understand a series of detrimental effects of slavery.Slavery is one kind of discrimination and the readers can as well relate it to many other different kinds of discrimination in our daily life.That is to say,we cannot look down upon any person for whatever reason and we should treat each and every one around us equally.Only in this way can people feel no potential influences of any type of discrimination and no harm will be caused.At the same time,the readers can also learn that it is necessary to fight for our own rights and interests via our personal efforts if we are not treated equally;otherwise we will be bullied all the time.
